January 1st
Today officially marks the day where our tagline ("Taking money from Wall Street hobos since 2008") actually means something. Ironically, when we created that tagline earlier this – oops, I mean last – year, we had no idea that there really would be a lot of homeless, unemployed people in lower Manhattan.

As the holiday season gets underway, we're starting to get more positive price action in the market.
November 23rd
Let's face – nobody knows what the hell is going on with gold right now. Since it's summer highs, the price of gold has been dropping and generally following the trend of the overall market. Which is really, really weird from a historical perspective.
Gold isn't the only commodity tanking right recently. Oil has dropped significantly of late as well, as have copper and silver. The list goes on.

The market mapped out new lows this week, but Obama's announcement of his nominee for Treasury Secretary fueled a rally into Friday's close.

I've had New Oriental & Technology (EDU) on my watchlist for awhile. It's very attractive for a number of fundamental reasons, most notably increasing sales and earnings the last few quarters. They're also sitting on a pile of cash with no debt, which always makes this poor brother drool.
From a brand perspective, New Oriental also is in a great position as the lead provider of private educational services in China. They offer language instruction, preparation courses for standardized tests, private kindergartens, and a number of other services.

If you've been trading the approximate 150 point range in the S&P 500, then you've done ok, but that trade is getting a little crowded.
November 5th
With yesterday's vote being historic and all – though it remains to be seen how posterity will define "historic" – I need to pause for a moment and acknowledge that a little over four years ago, immediately after our current president-elect gave the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention, my good friend and fellow poor brother Dave sent me an instant message that read simply:
Barack Obama is going to be our first black president.
